High School High Tech Student Highlights
The Able Trust’s High School High Tech program gives high school students with disabilities experiences in job exploration and connections to postsecondary education resources. High School High Tech opens up a world of possibilities helping students see a future they might never have imagined.
Melisa
Melisa wanted a career in healthcare—and she refused to allow her auditory processing deficit and hearing loss keep her from achieving her dream. The education, internships, and career training she received as a student in The Able Trust’s High School High Tech program in Gainesville prepared Melisa to attend and graduate Magna Cum Laude from the University of Central Florida College of Nursing. A year into her first job as a registered nurse, Melisa was named her hospital’s Neuroscience Floor Rookie of the Year.
Today, Melisa works in an intensive care unit in Palm Coast. She credits High School High Tech for laying the foundation for her success. The support she received participating in the program, combined with her own drive and determination to make an impact in the healthcare industry, ultimately made it possible for her to achieve her dream of becoming a registered nurse.
Lucas
A talented artist and animator, former Hillsborough County High School High Tech student Lucas attended the University of South Florida’s Arts4All Animation Camp and quickly impressed course instructor Dani Bowman. The instructor offered Lucas a scholarship to her advanced course, where he worked with his fellow students to create an animated film that was ultimately presented at a Comic-Con event in Pittsburgh. Lucas played a central role in the project, drawing and animating the main character for the film.
Now that he has graduated, Lucas is ready to pursue studies in animation, art and information software. The skills and strategies he learned through High School High Tech have prepared him for future successes—and we’re excited to see what he draws up next!
