Development for Students in Florida
The Able Trust is collaborating with the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation,
Commission for Transportation Disadvantaged and the Florida Community College
System to sponsor Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) in Florida. A national initiative
of the American Association of People with Disabilities and the US Department
of Labor, DMD will kick off around the country on Wednesday, October 16, 2002.
The activity is being held in honor of October's designation as National Disability
Employment Awareness Month.
DMD matches students with disabilities with workplace mentors according to career interests, enabling them to learn more about what a job is like day-to-day and how to prepare for such a career. The activity is designed to help employers understand what people with disabilities have to offer and identify potential recruiting targets.
In Florida, The Able Trust's High School/High Tech programs will serve as local coordinating sites for DMD. Local coordinators will help to recruit employers and students, and connect the two for a successful mentoring experience. Coordinators are located in Cocoa Beach, Gainesville, Madison, Melbourne, Miami, Ocala, Orlando, Sarasota, Tallahassee, Tamarac and Tampa.
Students and employers can sign up to participate by visiting The Able Trust
website at www.abletrust.org, which provides
contact information for local coordinators in Florida. If your city is not represented,
and you'd like to participate as a local coordinator, student or workplace mentor,
call The Able Trust at 888-838-2253 toll-free or email kristen@abletrust.org.
